Fr. Tom Aherne
Fr Tom Aherne, the former Parish Priest of Bridgwater, died suddenly on the evening of Friday the 23rd of February at the flat to which he had retired in Bradford on Avon. Born in County Cork Ireland on the 25th of October 1927 he studied for the Priesthood at St Patrick’s College, Carlow and was ordained a priest on the 15th of June 1952. He served as a Curate in Bridgewater before moving to serve in parishes in Bristol, Salisbury and Stroud. In September 1967 he was appointed as Priest in Charge of St Thomas More Parish in Bradford on Avon. In 1974 he became Parish Priest of St Catharine’s Parish, Frome. In January 1983 he moved to become Parish Priest of St Joseph’s Parish Bridgwater. He retired in October 1999 and returned to live in Bradford on Avon where he continued to help in local parishes.

On hearing of his death Bishop Mervyn Alexander said "It will come as a great shock to parishioners of St Joseph’s Church, Bridgwater, to hear that their former Parish Priest, Fr Tom Aherne, has died so suddenly. His first appointment as a priest was to Bridgwater and so he had a long connection with the town. He took a great interest in its history and he was fascinated to discover in a local cemetery the grave of an Irish Soldier who had taken part in the charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimean War. Fr Tom will be remembered as a totally dedicated priest who was an example to all." Arrangements for Fr Tom’s funeral have not yet been made.

Search and rescue awards
The 44 years of volunteer search and rescue work which Department of Conservation officer Brian Ahern gave in the Southern Lakes region and Westland have been recognised in two awards to his widow, Rosemary. Commissioner Rob Robinson presented her with a certificate of appreciation from New Zealand Police for dedicated assistance to the force from 1956 until the time of his death last year. Mr Robinson told an audience more than 100 on the Edgewater Resort Hotel lawn this month that Mr Ahern who in recent years was based in Glenorchy, had been the cornerstone of the co-operation between voluntary groups and the police in emergencies. Roscoe Tait, of Auckland, representing NZ Landsar, the national search and rescue organisation, made the presentation of its top service award. Commissioner Robinson and other speakers paid tribute to the wives and families who shared the stress of search and rescue volunteers "who knew the dangers of the wilderness, and made it safer for those who didn't" They were more than heroes — they were the stuff legends were made of, the police chief said. Mr Ahern headed the Mount Ruapehu ski patrol in 1964 and made two trips to Antarctica as a carpenter and dog handler and one to Nepal to work on Sir Ed Hillary's hospital. In the South Island, he worked for national parks boards and the Department of Conservation. In 1994 when the search and rescue scheme was reorganised, he became a key figure in the Southern Lakes region.

Lance Neville Ahern was born on August 12, 1912, in North Sydney, the eldest child and only son of Lance Walter and Mary-Jane Ahern. Young Neville — he was known at school simply as Curly — and his sister, Laurel, gre up in Parkes and Taree. A very bright student, excelling at mathematics and the sciences, he developed his passion for flying early. Having left school, he used all his spare cash to pay for flying lessons at the Newcastle Aero Club. At the same time he started an accounting diploma, but when World War II broke out he volunteered, becoming a pilot with the RAAF's 451 Squadron. Later Ahern was seconded to the RAF's 112 Squadron, flying Kittyhawks, Spitfires and Mustangs.

He had one of the most distinguished service records, earning the Distinguished Service Order and the Distinguished Flying Cross. The citation for the DSO read: "Squadron-Leader Ahern has taken part in the campaigns in the Western Desert, North Africa, Sicily and Italy. His ability as a pilot has been outstanding. On several occassions his aircraft sustained severe damage from anti-aircraft fire, and once he was forced to make a crash landing, fortunately just behind our own lines. Since he has been in command of his squadron, he has led many successful and spectacular missions that have resulted in the destruction or damaging of numerous mechanised vehicles, tanks, railway bridges, and a number of ammunition dumps which exploded. He has personally destroyed three enemy aircraft on the ground and damaged two FW190s in air combat. The high standard of efficiency and superb example of courage set by Squadron Leader Ahern has been beyond praise."

His first crash landing occurred in the Western Desert where he was stranded upside down in his aircraft. A tank appeared; Ahern was not immediately sure to which side the tank belonged. Ahern remained as still as possible. The tank hatch opened and a very English voice inquired, "I say, old chap, do you have a screwdriver?" He stayed the rest of the day in the tank, caught in a crossfire. He remembered the day as one of his most terrifying of the war. On the other occassion, while strafing German troops in Italy, his aircraft was badly damaged by ground fire, and rather than bale out over the enemy, he glided his aircraft to behind Allied lines. His physical decline in later years would be linked to back injuries sustained in those forced landings.

Returning to Australia in December 1944, he renewed an earlier acquaintance with two sisters, Joan and Leslie Williams, while on holiday at Forster. A friendship with Joan blossomed into romance and they married on February 23, 1946, a happy and magical partnership that would last for more than half a century. Ahern joined the airline ANA and became the training captain on DC-3s. The company thanked him for being responsible for raising the flying standards of its first officers with his capable and conscientious training. His civilian flying career was cut short due to high-tone deafness, due to burst eardrums caused by his wartime flying, and he retired from Ansett in October 1958. He and a group of other pilots then built and for many years ran the second set of commercial squash courts in Australia, at St. Leonards. He played the game with a vengeance. On several occassions Ahern dislocated his shoulder or ended up having his head stitched as the result of his energetic playing.

He was passionate about the present Australian flag and about opera, La Boheme and Madama Butterfly being his favourites. Invited to be an elder at St. John's Church at Wahroonga, he proudly served the Uniting Church for many years. During the last years of his life Ahern suffered from a degenerative illness that prevented him enjoying his family, including his great-grandsons. He died peacefully and his survived by is wife Joan, his daughters Margie and Janice, his grandchildren Helen, Diana, David and Geoffrey, and his great-grandsons Adon, Kane and Steven.

Charlie O'Hearn
Charlie O'Hearn, a star in three sports at Yale in the 1920's and the school's oldest former football player, died April 19 in Naples, Fla. He was 99. Seventy-nine years after his 52-yard kick against Carnegie Tech on Sept. 30, 1922, it still stands as the longest drop-kicked field goal at Yale Bowl. Two other Yale players, Bill Moore and Ed Perks, tied O'Hearn's record for distance, in 1982 and 1990, respectively, but they did it with place-kicks, which are easier than the drop kick, which was popular in the era in which O'Hearn played.

A kicking specialist and reserve running back, O'Hearn was a member of the 1923 Yale team, which won all eight of its games and is regarded by many football historians as the best football team in Yale history. A letterman in football for three years, O'Hearn also earned three letters in both baseball and hockey, and was captain of those teams in his senior year. O'Hearn's 52-yard field goal was the longest in college football in the 1922 season, his junior year. The distance was remarkable because the football used at that time was rounder and far more difficult to kick and pass than the elongated ball in use today. unlike today's place-kicker, for whom the ball is snapped to a holder who places it on the ground for the kicker to boot, a drop-kicker received the ball directly from the center, dropped it straight down and kicked it the second it hit the ground.

After a business career, O'Hearn, a native of Brookline, Mass., returned to Yale in 1951 and spent almost 20 years leading the university's fund-raising efforts. After his retirement in 1970, he moved to Florida. He is survived by a son, Michael, of Naples, and two daughters, Ginger Broadbent of Hamden, Conn., and Peggy Denby of Boca Grande, Fla.
