Rosemarie (Moran) Ahern
Rosemarie Ahern was gentle but full of passion. It was not always easy to see, but the petite redhead with piercing blue eyes was more than the quiet librarian she appeared to be. Much more. The good-natured librarian at Curie Metro High School was, in fact, a noted francophile, who had mastered the French language. The longtime Evergreen Park resident spoke the romance language with the skill of a native Parisian and visited the city often after her retirement from Curie Metro High School in 1989. "She spoke like they spoke French, but she was not as demonstrative," said her husband of more than 50 years, Patrick. Her love of French culture was great, and she accumulated numerous books on the subject.

Officials at Curie named part of their state of the art media center after Ahern; she donated her books to the school. Mrs. Ahern died Jan. 9 at her Palos Park nursing home from Alzheimer's complications. She was 75. "She was a remarkable woman, absolutely brilliant," said her husband, a longtime Chicago Public School administrator. Mrs. Ahern herself showed great promise as a student, before becoming an educator to generations of Chicago school children. The Englewood-raised graduate of the old Visitation High School received full scholarships to Rosary College—now Dominican University—and to Mundelein College. Years after she double majored in pre-medicine and education, she received a master's degree from Chicago State University.

Raised in the Back of the Yards community, Mrs. Ahern grew up the daughter of tavern owners. Later, she and her husband settled in Evergreen Park, when the suburb was burgeoning with young families moving there from the South Side. All of the couple's six children graduated from college, encouraged by their parents' example, and all have successful careers. "We inspired them to be academically oriented and they were," Patrick Ahern said. At work, Mrs. Ahern's mild demeanor did not interfere with getting the most out of her students. "Even though she was soft-spoken, she was able to get the students to do whatever she said without raising her voice," said principal Jerryelyn Jones. Jones had worked under Patrick Ahern, when he was principal at Lindbloom High School and later worked with Mrs. Ahern when she arrived at Curie in 1982. "She was always involved, but she was never loud about it. Everyone who knew her liked her," Jones said.

So after Mrs. Ahern's prized collection of French books was donated to Curie's media center, the school christened it the "Rosemarie Ahern Collection." Now French students can go to the center and read any of the dozens of books donated to the school. It was around the time of her retirement that Mrs. Ahern had a renewed interest in French culture. She and her husband spent time traveling Europe, especially her beloved France. Mrs. Ahern was a member of Alliance Française de Chicago, a worldwide organization with the purpose of promoting French language and culture. In 1999, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and went to live in the nursing care facility. In addition to her husband, Patrick, Mrs. Ahern is survived by six children; 29 grandchildren; and a brother, retired Cook County Judge Matthew Moran.

Anna G. Murphy worked at numerous jobs from a very young age. Before moving to California in the 1956, she worked for CBS Hytron, in Danvers MA. After moving to CA Anna worked for Ampex, in Redwood City. One of her favorite jobs was teaching class of religion, for The Holy Innocent, mentally challenged children. She received awards from, Queen Of The Apostles Catholic Church in San Jose, and from the Bishop, for her devotion and excellent teaching skills.

Anna has always loved children, the garden and doing for others. While living as a resident at Barton Memorial Nursing Facility she made many friends. Staff members would go to her room on their break, to have her teach them how to knit. Anna enjoyed making booties, hats and blankets for babies, scarves for just about everyone she knew, and afghans for all of her family members. All dogs that visited Barton Skilled Nursing, received knitted Christmas collars from Anna. Barton Memorial Nursing Facility was a place where Anna had a mission. In the years that she lived at Barton, she contributed a great deal. Her smiles and caring gestures, brightened many residents lives at Barton. Anna handed out "Never Give Up" signs from Fr. Jim Mifsud. They hang everywhere in the Nursing Facility. She enjoyed reading to a blind friend, took residence upstairs to the hospital, to see other residence that became ill and had to be hospitalized. She spent time with those in the last hours of their life, comforting them, holding their hand and assuring them everything would be all right. Before living at Lake Tahoe, Anna lived in Santa Clara CA. When she lived at Valley Village, an independent living facility in Santa Clara, she made many friends there. She brought joy to many of the friends she had there. She missed them when she became ill and had to move to Tahoe.

To know Anna Murphy is to love her. She could discuss anything from politics to sports. Loved to watch Larry King, CNN, football and baseball and Tiger Woods play golf. She also loved talk radio. Irish music was one of her favorites to sing and listen to. Anna made it her business, to understand what was going on, in whatever community she lived in. She was very proud to be able to say, she voted in every election, from the time she was of age to vote. Her strong faith is something that she would tell you, carried her through the hard times in her life. Her faith also helped family and friends get through their hard times. She was always saying a prayer novena for someone. People that knew her said, she had a direct line to heaven. Everywhere Anna has lived she has made friends. Her children's friends became her friends. They loved her like she was their own mother or grandmother. Anna will be missed deeply by family and friends, but never will the memories be forgotten. Anna was a devoted mother. Her family would like to thank Dr. Peterson and all of the Nursing Staff of Barton Memorial Nursing Facility, for their devotion and excellent care they gave Anna. All of you have made a difference for Anna

Virginia L. (Mason) Ahern
Virginia L. Ahern, 85, died May 19, 2006 at Regency Harbor Care. She was born Feb. 10, 1921 to George and Mary Mason in Lincoln, Neb. Virginia was raised in many states around the country but graduated from El Monte High School, Calif., in 1939. In 1948 she married John Ahern and settled down first in Medford, Ore., then in Rosemead, Calif. The Aherns were blessed with five children. Virginia worked as a secretary, then buyer's assistant to furniture buyers for Sears. She also retired after 25 years of service from Sears. Truth be told, she probably had a large part in keeping the buying office going. She enjoyed her job but her family always came first. Divorced in 1964, all of the challenges and financial responsibility of raising five children were on her shoulders and she always looked forward to the time she spent with them.

In 2004 Virginia’s youngest daughter, Kim, along with her son, Kory, decided to move to Whidbey Island to be closer to one of her sisters Kelly and her son Chris. It was decided that Virginia should come too. She moved into Regency in June 2004. She loved the staff and the staff seemed to love her as well. It was truly a great match. Virginia is survived by daughter Kerry Beamon with husband P.J. of Bar Nunn, Wyo., son Michael Ahern of Yucca Valley, Calif., daughters Kelly Whitney and Kim Ahern, both of Oak Harbor and Kathy Heavelin with husband Will of San Gabriel, Calif. She also leaves eight grandchildren: Chris, Kory, Rebekah, Catherine, Jesse, William, Andrew and Allison, and five great grandchildren. A private family visitation was held at Burley Funeral Chapel.

Ahearn, resident of North Salem, NY, since l964, physicist, researcher, and technology expert, whose wide-ranging patents, publications, awards and honors extend over the last 46 years, died unexpectedly on June 15. The cause was heart failure, according to a family spokesperson. Most recently, as Director and VP of Technical Planning, Bill Ahearn was instrumental in the founding and development of Coda Octopus, a company recognized internationally as a specialist in underwater technologies for imaging, mapping, defense and survey and a leading supplier of geosurvey solutions. Prior to that, Bill was a research physicist at the T.J. Other accomplishments included the development and qualification of high performance silicon multichip packages for high end mainframe systems and optical data channels. Subsequently he worked for the IBM VP of Engineering, Programming, and Technology, was appointed a Visiting Scholar at MIT and a Research Scientist at the MIT Media Laboratory, and in Europe was Multimedia Product Manager. After IBM retirement he had numerous consulting jobs with major technology companies in the US, Europe and Asia.

Bill was born in Sharon, Connecticut on August 15, l937, son of Marion (nee Pillar) and Thomas J. Ahearn, and spent his early years growing up in Amenia, New York, where he graduated from high school and enjoyed baseball, fishing, and other sports. He received a BA in physics from Clark University and a MSEE degree from New York University. His early career in physics included appointments at RCA and later at Sylvania Electronic Systems, working in electro optics and laser development.

Bill had many interests ranging from Renaissance Art, outdoor activities, and sports, including baseball, soccer, tennis, skiing and travel. He was a member of the board of trustees of the Alaska Conservation Foundation from l989-1993, involved in providing funding to environment projects throughout Alaska, including the Prince William Sound Cleanup. Active in community affairs in North Salem, Bill served as Planning Board Chairman, Library President, soccer coach, and Town Councilman. Bill was elected to the Dutchess County Baseball of Fame for his outstanding performance during his youth. He has remained a Westchester representative for Clark University, assisting high school students in the decision-making process about their college future.

Bill is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ruth McKinnie Ahearn, two children Kerry Barberet of Delray Beach, Fl, and Timothy Ahearn of Oakland, CA, a son-in-law Cedric Barberet and daughter-in-law Andrea Zambrana, two nieces Jennifer Ahearn-Goodman and Steffanie O'Sullivan, both of Tucson, AZ, as well as an extended network of cousins, many in Amenia, NY and Dutchess County. His brother, Thomas P. Ahearn predeceased him. A memorial service will be held at 4 pm on Friday, June 23, at St. James Episcopal Church, at the intersection of June Road and Titicus Road (Route 116) in North Salem. A reception will be held immediately after the service at the Ahearn home. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Clark University Scholarship Fund or to the Alaska Conservation Foundation.
