Town suffers loss of Pugliese
At the impressionable age of 6, Frederick Jr. had only just begun to idolize his father, Frederick L. Pugliese. Pugliese died suddenly at the age of 50 on Tuesday. Always a gentleman to others, people in town said little Frederick's footsteps were not far behind his dad's. For many others in Watertown, Pugliese meant a lot of other things to them: a fellow councilor, co-worker, loving husband, brother and friend. On Tuesday night at Mount Auburn Hospital, Pugliese faced intestinal trouble and a chemical imbalance that simply made his heart stop working. But his wife of 13 years, Julie Ahern, said his heart would always be alive within her and within the town he served.

A town councilor from 1998 to 2005, Pugliese announced to the TAB & Press last August that he had plans to run for a seat again. He also worked for the town as a town clerk in 1993, was a personnel director/assistant to the town manager in 1994 and was a lifelong resident of Watertown, among many other contributions. "He was a wonderful human being," Ahern said. "He loved his family and loved his community."

Pugliese had master of science degree in management from the MIT Sloan School of Management, and a bachelor of science degree from Northeastern University. Leanne Schnitzer, associate director of Alumni Relations at MIT Sloan School of Management and director of the MIT Sloan Reunion Program, said Pugliese was a member of the MIT Sloan 20th Reunion Committee, which was held last June. "Fred played an active and enthusiastic role in reaching out to his classmates," she said. "He was proud to be part of MIT Sloan and embodied the school's mission of developing innovative leaders."

Ahern said she met Pugliese in the early 1090s [sic] while working for the MBTA — Pugliese did the "computer stuff," she was a lawyer. "It was love at first sight," she said. Years later she made her way to Watertown, a "rare jewel" in her eyes, and found the same passion that he felt for the community around her. "When I found Fred, I found Watertown at the same time," she said. Their son, Frederick, is now in the first grade at Cunniff Elementary School. As a family, they went to Disney World together this Christmas.

Many of those who know Pugliese family said there couldn't have been a stronger one. "I never saw a relationship like this little family," said At-Large Councilor Marilyn Devaney who served on the council with Pugliese. "This is such a loss for Watertown. All he ever wanted to do was serve the people." Town Council President Clyde Younger said he was looking forward to have Pugliese run for a councilor post again, and said his personality really fit the bill. "[As a councilor], you have this title of honorable before your name," Younger said. "He was one of the more honorable people to meet." Although they didn't always vote on the issues together, Pugliese "always knew were he stood on the issues." "He always did his homework," Younger said. Other town positions Pugliese took on included chairperson for the Charitable Funds Ad Hoc Committee, dedicated to the distribution of the Million Dollar O'Neill Gift for Non Profit Organizations, chairperson of the education and school system subcommittee and chairperson of the subcommittee on personnel and town organization, which included civil service and proposals for organization or reorganization of the town's departments and agencies. Town Manager Michael Driscoll said that in addition to all the roles Pugliese played in Watertown, it was the "unique perspective of serving the citizens of Watertown in both the executive and legislative branches of town government" that stood out the most to him. "While serving the citizens of Watertown, Fred was diligent in all matters, always prepared, and all of his efforts helped improve the quality of life for all who work and live in Watertown," Driscoll wrote in an e-mail. "My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time."

John DiMascio, a columnist for the TAB & Press, said he considers Pugliese to be "one of the best councilors he has ever met", and someone who always ended their political conversations with the "warmest remarks." Ahern said her husband's thoughtfulness and contributions to his community over time have given her something to always be grateful for. "I was very lucky to have him in my life," she said. Pugliese was the son of the late Mary and Alfred Pugliese, brother of Patricia Abramson of Wayland and Anne Pugliese of Watertown, uncle of Justin and Meara Abramson and her husband Julian Valenzuela. Funeral services will be held at The DeVito Funeral Home, 761 Mt. Auburn Street on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 8 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church on 25 Chestnut St, and a burial at Ridgelawn Cemetery. I am John Ahearn's sister, Lillian, and I want to thank everyone who offered their sympathy upon his sudden death on Monday, Feb. 12. There was so much love for him expressed to me at his wake. I renewed acquaintances with former neighbors from the Acre, where we grew up—the Sheehys, Meehans, McLeans, Sullivans, Floods, Dostalers, etc. Further down Broadway lived the Ashes, Richards. I could go on and on. It was a great neighborhood.

I want to thank all the World War II veterans who were there. Johnny Flood presented me with a clipping from the 1940s when he, my brother and Jimmy Winn were home on leave at the same time. All were heroes. Thank you Johnny! All day I heard what a great guy my brother was—a walking encyclopedia, one of a kind; we'll really miss him. So will I. I shall miss our monthly hourlong phone calls where he would set me straight on the Red Sox. Ouch! We didn't always agree, and he was usually right. We did agree on our lifelong love for Notre Dame football and big band music. Thank you all for reminding me what a great baseball/softball player he was. Some of you walked me over to the many team pictures displayed at the funeral home to point out how you looked way back then. A big thank you to my grandniece, Kristen, for arranging all the pictures. It brought back many happy memories to all. I heard much laughter around the pictures. Of course, stories were being told by everyone. Thank you, veterans, ballplayers, fellow telephone company workers. I truly appreciated your stories, your laughter, your tears. But most of all, your love. Lowell people are special.

Thanks to all who attended the funeral Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church. I'm sorry that I couldn't greet you personally, but I did see you. It meant a lot to me, your being there. St. Patrick's Day was special to us, so I'll close with an Irish Blessing: "Life is like a cup of tea. It's how you make it."

Pamela G. Ahearn, 52, Washington insider
Pamela G. Ahearn, 52, renowned specialist on protocol and diplomacy matters, died at her home in Alexandria on March 26 of a heart attack. Mrs. Ahearn was born Oct. 7, 1954, in Nashville, Tenn., to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Gardner. She graduated with honors from the University of Alabama in 1976. Mrs. Ahearn and her husband, Frederick L. Ahearn, are well known on the national political stage and met during the campaign of Virginia Gov. John Dalton. As a result of her work on Capitol Hill and earlier in her career at the State Department, Mrs. Ahearn was on a first-name basis with the majority of the Washington Diplomatic Corps. She frequently advised the diplomatic community on ceremonial events, etiquette and protocol. Serving under Republican House Speakers Newt Gingrich and J. Dennis Hastert, Mrs. Ahearn was responsible for almost a decade for arranging joint meetings of Congress and every visit of government leaders, foreign ministers, speakers of parliament and foreign dignitaries.

In the 1970s, Mrs. Ahearn worked on Sen. John W. Warner's U.S. Senate campaign, then became one of Mr. Warner's first staff members. During her association with Mr. Warner, Mrs. Ahearn served as executive assistant to his wife, Academy Award-winning actress Elizabeth Taylor. Mrs. Ahearn also held such jobs as director of liaison for the 1990 Economic Summit of Industrial Nations and director of protocol for the U.S. House from 1995 to 2004.

Mrs. Ahearn is survived by her husband; mother Jewell Eskew and stepfather Charles Eskew, of Franklin, Tenn.; and sisters Patricia Simpson of Nashville, Tenn., and Peggy Beasley, of Franklin, Tenn.

Pamela G. Ahearn dies at 52
Nashville native was Washington insider
Pamela G. Ahearn, a Nashville native who became an insider in Washington diplomatic affairs, has died at 52. Mrs. Ahearn died in her Alexandria, Va., home March 26, according to Demaine Funeral Home. The Washington Times reported that she died of a heart attack.

Mrs. Ahearn graduated with honors from the University of Alabama in 1976 before joining the campaign of Virginia Gov. John Dalton. She met her husband, Fredrick L. Ahearn, while there, and the two became well known on the national political stage. She served under Republican House Speakers Newt Gingrich and J. Dennis Hastert and spent almost 10 years arranging joint meetings of Congress and every visit of government leaders and other dignitaries. While working on the campaign and then on the staff of Sen. John W. Warner in the 1970s, she also served as executive assistant to Warner's wife, actress Elizabeth Taylor.

Pamela Ahearn; protocol officer made dignitaries feel at home
by Gloria Negri
When Pamela Ahearn was entrusted to fly across the country to Los Angeles carrying millions of dollars worth of jewelry belonging to Elizabeth Taylor, then the wife of US Senator John Warner, Mrs. Ahearn dressed plainly for fear of attracting the attention of thieves. She was picked up in a small vehicle equipped with flashing lights and sirens. That may have been the most unusual assignment Mrs. Ahearn had in her years as protocol officer for the State Department and the House of Representatives, but her career was not lacking for drama.

Mrs. Ahearn, whose duties ranged from organizing state dinners for visiting dignitaries and making funeral arrangements when sitting members of Congress died to announcing the arrival of the diplomatic corps at State of the Union addresses, died of an apparent heart attack March 26 at her home in Alexandria, Va. She was 52. Mrs. Ahearn and her husband, Frederick L., began spending time in West Falmouth in 1977 and soon established a home there, splitting their time between Cape Cod and Washington. Her husband's father, the late Francis X. Ahearn, was president of the Boston City Council in the 1950s.

Known for her flawless choreography of diplomatic gatherings, Mrs. Ahearn was tapped by President Reagan and his wife to accompany them to the former Soviet Union in 1988 to oversee arrangements for a state dinner they hosted for Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev at the US ambassador's residence. It required both advance planning and attention to minute cultural differences, friends said, but the evening went off without a hitch. Nancy Reagan was particularly grateful. "When my husband and I traveled to Moscow for the Summit, it was very important that everything went smoothly," she said in a statement yesterday. "In spite of the challenges of hosting an American State Dinner in a foreign country, Pam provided all the special touches that made our dinner at Spaso House so memorable."

Condolences poured in over the past week, as word of Mrs. Ahearn's sudden death spread through diplomatic ranks. "Washington's diplomatic community will miss her protocol expertise and gentle touch," Colin Powell, former secretary of state, said in a statement. "Pam's smile was real — not just protocol. And her bounce was infectious. She could also handle the unexpected," former secretary of state George Schultz said by e-mail.

Mrs. Ahearn served as assistant chief of protocol for ceremonials in the State Department under Schultz during the Reagan Administration. Schultz "always said if protocol goes smoothy, no one notices; but if there is a mistake, it is on the front page of every newspaper," Selwa Roosevelt, chief of protocol in the Reagan Administration, said in a statement. "I am happy to say that Pam just did not make mistakes, and thanks to her we managed to stay off the front page." At the State Department, the logistics of planning luncheons and dinners for visiting dignitaries and heads of state were daunting. "At a State luncheon," said Catherine C. Murdock, of Middleburg, Va., who was assistant chief of protocol for visits in the State Department when Mrs. Ahearn was there, "Pam would have to know the dietary restrictions of the visiting president and first lady. The seating was very important, and she would need to know who outranks whom, both in the visiting group and in the Washington group. She also had to decide on the color of flowers, which might be offensive to some, and the entertainment." Often, Mrs. Ahearn had just seconds to avoid a protocol error, Murdock said. "Senators and congressman might have to cancel at the last minute, and Pam would have to reorganize the seating in a minute, if not a second. But, Pam never lost her cool. The bigger the hitch was, the bigger her smile."

After leaving the State Department, Mrs. Ahearn worked in protocol for six months for the 1990 Summit of Industrialized Nations and from 1991 to 1993 with the United States Information Service. From 1995 to 2004, she was director of protocol for the House of Representatives under Republican Speaker Newt Gingrich. Her appointment drew fire from House Democrats, not about her specifically, but about the need for the $62,000-a-year position. Colorado's Patricia Schroeder said at the time that it was like having "our own Ms. Manners." However, Mrs. Ahearn's husband said, many Democrats sought his wife's advice on personal social manners "on a regular basis."

Her reputation for never getting flustered was well earned. Once, her husband said, when Prime Minister John Major of Britain was about to have lunch with Gingrich in the speaker's office, she crawled under the table to adjust its legs and was there when they arrived. But keeping her cool, she crawled out from under the cloth and seated them.

Mrs. Ahearn's social graces may have stemmed from her Southern upbringing. "Pam was a bit like a Southern belle," said Joseph Holley, a former assistant to President Reagan. "She was a sweet person, extremely elegant in terms of everything she did." She was born in Nashville, Tenn., one of four children. Her two younger sisters, Patricia Simpson of Nashville and Peggy Beasley of Franklin, Tenn., both described her as a very supportive older sister, who looked after them and made sure, even when they were all children, that they were on time for dinner. She loved politics and was a staunch Republican, who "always dreamed of going to Washington," Beasley said. And so she did soon after graduating from the University of Alabama in 1976 with honors and a degree in American studies. She was working on the gubernatorial campaign of John Dalton of Virginia in 1977 when she met Rick Ahearn, a political consultant for the candidate. Ahearn said they married in 1990 "after dating for 13 years."

In 1979, Mrs. Ahearn worked on the campaign of John Warner and then became executive assistant to his wife, Elizabeth Taylor. At the time of her death, Mrs. Ahearn was on hiatus from work. She was looking forward to another summer on Cape Cod, where she "loved her friends, the beach, and boating," her husband said. In addition to her husband and two sisters, Mrs. Ahearn leaves her mother, Jewell Eskew, and her stepfather, Charles Eskew, of Franklin, Tenn., and a brother, James Gardner of Lakeland, Fla. A funeral service was held yesterday in Alexandria. Interment will be Friday at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Nashville.

Paul L. Ahern
As a Lake Forest alderman in the 1960s, Paul L. Ahern saw the threat posed by subdivision of large estates and development of the city's open spaces. An early proponent of land conservation in the suburbs, Mr. Ahern helped start the Lake Forest Open Lands Association in 1967. The group now oversees 800 acres, most of it within the North Shore suburb, including six nature preserves.

Mr. Ahern, 87, died of natural causes Monday, May 21, at his Lake Forest home, said his son Mark. Mr. Ahern was the open-land group's second president and held the post from 1971 to 1977. During that time, the association forged a partnership with the Nature Conservancy's Illinois chapter and started an educational program with Lake Forest schools, said Steve Bartram, executive director of the group. "Back in the '70s, the idea of a local land trust was a novelty," Bartram said. "He needed to use his attributes as an ambassador and salesman as to why it was important to set aside land and property to preserve the historic landscape of our community."

A native of Missouri, Mr. Ahern studied chemical engineering at the University of Denver before taking a job in the legal department of Standard Oil in Chicago, where he met his future wife, Elayne Kelly. She died in August. While at Standard Oil he attended law school at DePaul University. He then worked in the patent department at Abbott Laboratories before joining the trademark and patent specialty firm of Leydig Voit & Mayer, where he remained for more than 40 years. He specialized in chemistry and chemical engineering cases, and among the clients he represented was the inventor of the polymer used in soft contact lenses, said Michael Hartmann, senior partner at the firm. "Paul enjoyed the give and take between lawyers in the courtroom," Hartmann said. "He was a great teacher, very patient with younger lawyers like me. He always had a story to tell."

Mr. Ahern's tenure on the Lake Forest City Council in the 1960s, including stints as acting mayor, was the impetus for his involvement with the Open Lands Association. "It was really being familiar with the issues of growth in Lake Forest and realizing a lot of the larger estates would be eaten up by development," his son said. "I think he felt that to keep the character of the community, you really needed to preserve some open space and not just have it filled up with housing tracts." The association works by accepting land donations and funds that can be used to buy property. In the early days, the idea of a land trust was not common in the Midwest and Mr. Ahern had to offer reasoned arguments to coax contributions from skeptical residents, Bartram said. "His skills as a lawyer really helped," said his son. "You really had to lay out a story for this. It was a struggle at first." Much of the land under the association's initial purview was prairie, and within the land trust's holdings are 12 miles of nature trails. Mr. Ahern remained a life director and served on the executive committee of the association until his death. His son Mark is on the group's board of directors and his son Patrick also is involved with the group.

In addition to his two sons, Mr. Ahern is survived by two other sons, Paul Jr. and James; a daughter, Mary; and 13 grandchildren. Visitation is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wenban Funeral Home, 320 E. Vine Ave., Lake Forest. Mass will be said at 5 p.m. Thursday at Church of St. Mary, 175 E. Illinois Rd., Lake Forest.

Maj. James Michael "Jimmy" Ahearn
Army Maj. Jim "Jimmy" Ahearn, a former Concord resident, died in Iraq in a roadside bomb Thursday. He was 43. Though he most recently lived in North Carolina with his wife, Lena, and 1½-year-old daughter, Kadi, Ahearn lived in Concord as a child—from 1977 to 1982, when he graduated from Clayton Valley High School, said his brother, Kevin Ahearn. His mother, Connie, still lives in Concord.

"He loved baseball, he loved football—to watch, not to play—and we always biked and hiked together," said Kevin Ahearn, 39. "A lot of his friends still live in Concord, so I think they would want to know what happened." Kevin Ahearn said the services haven't been planned yet, but will probably happen in North Carolina, where his brother had lived for the last two years. After joining the Army 18 years ago, Jim Ahearn moved around a lot and even got his college degree while serving in the military. Kevin Ahearn said he didn't know if other soldiers were killed in the same bombing.

He was the recipient of many medals throughout his career, including two bronze stars received for valor during the battle for Baghdad. In addition to his wife, daughter, brother and mother, Ahearn is survived by his father, Jim Ahearn, along with brother Sean and sister Kelly.

Family, soldiers pay tribute to fallen comrades

About 300 people filled the chapel at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Chapel on Fort Bragg for the memorial service. Another 100 soldiers and friends sat under a small tent in the parking lot and watched the service on flat-screen TVs.
Kevin Ahearn's big brother and best friend is gone.
Maj. James M. Ahearn, 43, was killed in Baghdad on July 5 when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb. Sgt. Keith A. Kline, 24, also was killed in the blast. "I think he was doing exactly what he believed in," Kevin Ahearn said. James Ahearn and Kline were assigned to Company B, 96th Civil Affairs Battalion, 95th Civil Affairs Brigade. The battalion remembered both men Thursday morning at a memorial service at John F. Kennedy Memorial Chapel on Fort Bragg. About 300 people filled the chapel. Another 100 soldiers and friends sat under a small tent in the parking lot and watched the service on three flat-screen TVs.

Kevin Ahearn said he remembers getting e-mails from his brother in Iraq asking him to collect toys and send them to Baghdad. "He never asked for anything for himself, it was always about the kids," Kevin Ahearn said. Both soldiers' boots, M-4 rifles, dog tags and helmets were displayed at the front of the chapel. They were flanked by the American flag and battalion colors. "It is humbling to have soldiers with such courage and character serving in the ranks of the 95th Civil Affairs Brigade," said Col. Ferdinand Irizarry, commander of the unit. "Maj. Ahearn and Sgt. Kline were a microcosm of all that is good about America. They don't come any better." It was Ahearn's third time in Iraq.

Maj. Don Sculli said Ahearn was known as "Grandpa" because he was one of the oldest soldiers in the unit. In preparation for his speech, Sculli printed out all of the messages about Ahearn on an online tribute site. "I laughed and cried when this task ran my printer out of paper," Sculli said. Ahearn was known as a smart and compassionate leader who held himself and his soldiers to a high standard. But, most of all, he was a loving husband and father to his daughter, Khadijah. It was during his second tour that he met his Iraqi wife, Lena. Lena said earlier this month that when he was home, Ahearn bought her a card, a flower and a doughnut every Sunday morning. Sculli joked that when that story hit the newspaper, it put pressure on all of Ahearn's friends. "Jimmy, buddy, you've got us all in trouble now," Sculli said. "Now we're going to have to step up our standards on Sunday morning." . . . Ahearn will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery next week.
