Margaret Holzknecht Ahearn on Sunday, January 21, 1990. Age 65 years. Beloved wife of Richard L. Ahearn. Beloved mother of Mark R. Ahearn, Anne A. Shields, Joan A. Graves, and Laura J. Ahearn. Sister of Carolyn H. Henry and the late Roger Holzknecht. Grandmother of Adam L. Shields. Daughter of Carl Holzknecht. Marion (Burnett) Ahern
Marion (Burnett) Ahern, a professor emeritus of accounting at Middlesex Community College, died of a stroke Wednesday at Beth Israel Hospital. A lifelong resident of Somerville, she was 67. Mrs. Ahern joined the Middlesex faculty in 1975 when the campus was in Bedford and retired in 1989 after it had moved to Burlington. In 1986, the faculty cited her as its outstanding professor. She taught accounting at the former Burdett College in Boston from 1947 to 1971 and at Massachusetts Bay Community College in Wellesley from 1971 to 1973. Mrs. Ahern graduated from Somerville High School in 1940 and Salem State College in 1945. She received a master's degree in education at Suffolk University in 1972. Her husband, Charles W., a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority carman, died in 1984. She leaves two sons, Charles W. Jr. of Malden and Dr. Donald M. of Surrey, Maine; a daughter, Marion T. Hutchinson of Somerville; and five grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be said Monday at 9 a.m. in St. Catherine's Church, Somerville. Burial will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Elisabeth L. (Brine) O'Hearn
A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow in St. John the Evangelist Church, Wellesley Hills, for Elisabeth L. (Brine) O'Hearn of West Roxbury, a member of the Ace of Clubs, Cecilian Guild and the League of Catholic Women of Boston. Mrs. O'Hearn died Monday at the New England Baptist Hospital. She was 87. In the Ace of Clubs and Cecilian Guild, both sponsored by the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, she knit sweaters and in other ways aided the poor.

Born in Cambridge, Mrs. O'Hearn graduated from Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, Georgetown Visitation and the Garland School of Boston. Her husband, John P. O'Hearn, a real estate appraiser, died in 1963. She leaves three daughters, Elisabeth M. and Jean P. of West Roxbury, and Ann Marie Fish of Milton; a son, John P. Jr. of Waban; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury.

Howard Thomas Ahern
HOWARD THOMAS AHERN, 78, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Bergenfield, died Thursday. Before retiring in 1971, he was a claims examiner for the New York Life Insurance Co., New York City. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Joan L. Ahern; a son, Paul of Capitola, Calif.; a daughter, Joan Block of Salinas, Calif.; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Arrangements were made by Farley Funeral Home, Venice (Calif.) Chapel. Donations to the Hospice of Southwest Florida, 6055 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla. 34238, would be appreciated.

Paul C. "Pat" Ahern
Paul C. "Pat" Ahern, former vice president of H.A. Seinsheimer Co., died Monday. Mr. Ahern, 77, of Western Hills, spent his entire career with the men's and boys' clothing firm before retiring in 1975, when the company was sold to the Palm Beach Clothing line, said son Mark Ahern. Active in civic affairs, Mr. Ahern was a past president of the National Conference of Christians and Jews and a former member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. He also was a member of the Western Hills Country Club, the Queen City Club and St. Antoninus Parish and choir. During the 1970s, Mr. Ahern, a graduate of Elder High School, was named one of the school's most successful graduates, said the younger Ahern. Mr. Ahern was a 1933 graduate of Xavier University. After his retirement, Mr. Ahern enjoyed reading, golfing and playing the piano. Other survivors include sons, Neal J. Ahern of Cincinnati and the Rev. Dennis P. Ahern of Chicago; daughters, Patricia Ahern, Kathleen A. Marcum and Ann A. Baird, all of Cincinnati; sisters, Janet Smyth and Lucille Fischer of Cincinnati; and seven grandchildren. Services: 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Antoninus Church, 1500 Linneman Road. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at B.J. Meyer Sons Funeral Home, 4841 Glenway Ave., Price Hill. Rev. John R. Aherne
John R. Aherne was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1913. It was here that he attended parish schools and graduated from Northeast Catholic High School in 1929. He entered the Augustinian Academy on Staten Island, New York as a postulant in the Order of St. Augustine and made his solemn profession of vows in 1934. He graduated from Villanova University in 1935 with an A.B. in Philosophy and pursued theological studies at Augustinian College in Washington, D.C., where he was ordained to the priesthood June 7, 1938. In 1939, he received a M.A. in English from the Catholic University of America. From 1939 to 1942, he taught at Villanova Prep in Ojai, California, and came to San Diego in 1942, where he was a teacher at St. Augustine High School until 1952. He became principal of the school the next year and also was named commissary provincial for the newly established vice-province of California, in which post he was head of all the Augustinians in California.

He was well-known to the academic, political, sports and legal communities in San Diego. His friends came from all segments of the San Diego community. Father Aherne was a prolific writer of poetry and prose as attested to his numerous volumes in the Saints library collection. He was also a major contributor of more than 100 articles to the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Religion. He served as president of Merrimack College in North Andover Massachusetts from 1968 until 1975. Father Aherne served on the Board of Trustees of Merrimack College, Villanova University and was chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners from 1976 to 1978. At the age of 77, Fr. Aherne died at the Our Mother of Good Counsel Monastery on the campus of Merrimack College on June 4, 1990.

Rev. John Robert Aherne
Rev. John Robert Aherne, president of Merrimack College from 1968 to 1976, died of lung disease Monday at Our Mother of Good Counsel Monastery on the North Andover campus. He was 77. Father Aherne liberalized elective courses, created a five-year work-study program for business majors and built a physical education complex and 14 dormitories during his eight years at [sic] the college's second president. Merrimack was established in 1947. Father Aherne, a poet, became its academic vice president in 1962. As president, he also expanded the college's fine arts department, introduced the Celebrity Series of performances by classical musicians, and provided for an artist-in-residence.

Born in Philadelphia, Father Aherne entered the Augustinian Academy in Staten Island in 1929 after graduating from Northeast Catholic High School in Philadelphia. He graduated from Villanova University in 1935, was ordained in 1938 and received a master's degree in English at Catholic University of America in 1939. He leaves three sisters, Sister Consuelo Marie Aherne of Chestnut Hill, Pa., and Sister Marion Aherne of Glenside, Pa. A funeral Mass wil be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Collegiate Church of Christ the Teacher, on the Merrimack campus. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshocken, Pa. [see also: John P. Patrick W. O'Hern
Patrick W. O'Hern, 46, 3915 Peters Ave., died Friday, June 29, 1990, at his residence after an apparent heart attack. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Morningside Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Arthur K. Beumler officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 - 9 p.m. today, with family present from 6-8 p.m., and Masonic services at 7 p.m. by the Morningside Lodge 615 A.F. & A. M, at the Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel. Mr. O'Hern was born September 24, 1943, in Tacoma, Washington. He attended Sioux City East High School and married Patricia Albeck on February 13, 1960, in Pipestone, Minnesota. He was a self-employed drywall contractor. He was a member of the Boys of '68 and Morningside Masonic Lodge 615, A.F.&A.M. He was a former member of the Sioux City Construction League and the Home Builders' Association. He was a Protestant. Survivors include his wife, his mother, Mrs. Clara Hummel of Sioux City; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Scott and Sally O'Hern, and Robby O'Hern, all of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, Duane (Duke) and Caral O'Hern, and James and Mary O'Hern, all of Sioux City, and one grand-daughter, Callie Jo O'Hern of Sioux City.

Mary H. O'Hern
UXBRIDGE — Mary H. O'Hern, 87, formerly of Quaker Highway, died yesterday at Lanessa Nursing Home in Webster. She leaves a nephew, Charles A. Lynch Jr. of Uxbridge; and four nieces, Margaret Paul of Uxbridge, Eleanor Morrison of Charlton, Barbara Morissey of Medfield and Claire Link of Wakefield, R.I. She was born in Providence, R.I., daughter of John and Mary (Finnegan) O'Hern, and lived in Providence most of her life. She lived in Uxbridge 10 years before going to Webster.

Miss O'Hern was a schoolteacher in the Providence school system for 47 years, retiring in 1967. She was a graduate of Classical High School and Rhode Island College, both of Providence. The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow from Tancrell-Jackman Funeral Home, 35 Snowling Road, with a Mass at 11 in St. Mary's Church, 75 Mendon St. Burial will follow in St. Anne's Cemetery, Cranston, R.I. Mary Louise (Ahearn) Cornwell
CORNWELL, MARY LOUISE, 83, of Inverness, died Sunday (July 22, 1990). Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she came here 20 years ago from Smyrna, Del. She was a Catholic. Survivors include two sons, James Francis, Lebanon, Pa., and Edward; a daughter, Lois Adrian, Inverness; two brothers, Torrance Ahearn, Riviera Beach, and Vincent Ahearn, West Palm Beach; two sisters, Catherine Hayes, Jupiter, and Adelle Welch, Callicoon, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Robert J. Ahern
Robert J. Ahern, 80, of Bitely, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 1990 at the emergency room of Gerber Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 22, 1910, at Montreal, Canada, the son of Robert P. and Lea J. (Noel) Ahern. He worked for over 38 years at the Dearborn Engine Plant of Ford Motor Company until his retirement in 1971. He was a communicant of Christ the King Church in Hesperia.

Survivors include four brothers, Louis Ahern of Caro, Anthony Ahern of Arizona, Henry and George Ahern, both of Bitely; one sister, Mary Abbatoy of Bitely; and many nieces and nephews.

The Rosary was recited in Friday, Aug. 3, at the Raymond Funeral Home in Hesperia with the funeral mass on Saturday, August 4 at Christ the King Church in Hesperia with Rev. Isidro Gargantiel celebrant.

Mary C. (Smith) Ahearn
MARLBORO—Mary C. (Smith) Ahearn, 98, of 14 Elm St., died Monday in Bolton Manor of Marlboro. Her husband, Charles W. Ahearn, died in 1974. She leaves two sons, Charles W. Ahearn of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and John E. Ahearn of Hudson; three daughters, Mary A. Vaillancourt and Margaret A. Kokernak, both of Marlboro, and Elizabeth F. Bonney of Onset; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ahearn was born in Marlboro, daughter of Edward F. and Catherine A. (Callahan) Smith. She graduated from Marlboro High School in 1910 and from the Bryant-Stratton Business School of Boston in 1912. She lived in Marlboro most of her life. Mrs. Ahearn was an executive secretary for the president of the former Curtis Shoe Co. of Marlboro. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and a former member of the Newman Catholic Women's Club and the Holy Rosary Sodality at the church. The funeral will be held Saturday with a Mass at 9 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 22 Prospect St. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Calling hours at John P. Rowe Funeral Home Inc., 57 Main St., are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.

John Claire Ahern
Former Madelia crop-duster and farmer John Claire Ahern, 68, died Sunday, September 16, 1990, at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital, Mankato, MN. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Madelia, the Rev. Peter Klein officiating, Burial with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery, Madelia, MN. Visitation is 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Pilgrim Funeral Home, Madelia and will continue until services at the church Wednesday, September 19, 1990. Mr. Ahern was born September 21, 1921 in rural Madelia to John and Mary Lillian (Duffy) Ahern. He grew up in Madelia and graduated from Madelia High School in 1940. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces in September 1944 as an Aviation Cadet, and after completing flight training in Texas, Colorado, and Kansas, was assigned as a flight instructor at Randolph Field, San Antonio, Texas. He was discharged in the rank of second lieutenant in October 1945. He married Madeline Fuori of New York, in Texas, November 18, 1944. After his discharge they farmed in St. James, Grove City and Madelia until they were divorced in 1962. He married Mary Hart Smith in Madelia, January 13, 1968. They operated a crop-dusting business for many years. He was a member of the Madelia American Legion post and was an avid woodworker and lapidary. Mr. Ahern is survived by two sons, John of North Carolina and Timothy of California; four daughters, Ellen Tooney of Long Island, N.Y., Rita Rudolph and Janet Ahern of Houma, LA, and Elizabeth Ahern of California; brothers Francis of Mankato, Lawrence of St. James, Albert of Madelia; sisters Myrtle (Mrs. Harold) Warner of Madelia and Marian (Mrs. Curtis) Hanson of Madelia; and 18 grandchildren. His wife, his parents, and a son, Michael, preceded him in death.

Richard E. Ahern
Richard E. Ahern, 66, of 44 Hendom Drive, Feeding Hills, a retired combustion engineer and contact administrator at Gilbarco Co., and a Navy veteran of World War II, died on Monday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. He worked at Gilbarco of Windsor, Conn. (formerly Gilbert & Barker Manufacturing Co. of West Springfield), and from 1966 to 1969 he received management training in Greensboro, N.C. After that, he was a combustion engineer and contact administrator from 1969 until retiring in 1985. As a contact administrator, he traveled to various parts of the world, including Korea, India, Spain, Italy, and most of the United States. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and served as a radarman third class aboard the USS Chester from 1943 to 1946.

Born in Springfield, he was a graduate of the High School of Commerce. He was graduated in 1952 from Northeastern University with a degree in business administration management. He moved to Feeding Hills in 1969. He was a founder and charter member of the Agawam Organ Club, and in 1980 became its first president. He held the position for 10 years. He also belonged to the West Springfield Elks Lodge.

He leaves his wife of 41 years, the former Mary L. Sheehan; two daughters, Jo-Anne Haire of Enfield and Margaret "Peggy" Long of West Springfield; two brothers, Thomas P. Jr. of South Hadley and Philip of Fort Worth, Texas; his stepmother, Alice (Teed) Ahern of Enfield; three stepbrothers, Richard Teed of Windsor, William Teed of Enfield and Robert Teed of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday morning at Colonial Funeral Home, with burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Springfield. Calling hours are Wednesday afternoon and evening. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, 01104.

Lucile Marie (O'Hern) Kingsbury
Lucile Marie Kingsbury, 83, of Ponca died Monday, Oct. 15, 1990, at a Sioux City hospital after a long illness. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Ponca, with the Rev. James Moores officiating. Entombment will be in the Ponca Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Mohr Funeral Home. A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. today at the church. Mrs. Kingsbury, the former Lucile Marie O'Hern, was born Nov. 6, 1906, in Sioux City. She was graduated from Central High School in 1925 and Morningside College in 1929. She was a music teacher at Pierson, Iowa, and Emerson and Waterbury in Nebraska. She married Merle Kingsbury July 16, 1935, in Sioux City. The couple made their home in Ponca. She was a secretary for Kingsbury & Kingsbury Law office in Ponca and also at the county attorney office for 12 years.

Mrs. Kingsbury was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City and was affiliated with the Methodist Church in Ponca. She served as director of the junior and senior choir for many years at the Methodist Church. She was a member of Chapter DG PEO; Order of Eastern Star, Hawthorne Chapter 168; and American Legion Auxilliary. Survivors include her husband; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Julee and Thomas and Rita, all of Sioux City, and Richard and Karen of Danbury, Iowa; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Brian Bernhardt of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren, Rick, Shawn, Douglas, Laurie, Julie, Cathy, Greg, Kelly, Katie and Jeffrey; and two great-grandchildren, Brooke and Kelsey.

Katherine M. Ahern
A funeral Mass was held Nov. 29 for Katherine M. Ahern, sister of Eleanor Brown of Danvers, in the Church of St. Augustine in Hartford, Conn. A former employee of the Travelers Insurance Co. in Harford for 45 years, and a former resident of Hartford, Miss Ahern died Nov.27 in a Danvers nursing home following a long illness. Born in Hartford, she attended Hartford schools. In addition to her sister, Miss Ahern leaves a brother, Francis D. Ahern of Old Lyme, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of the late Edmond and Ann (Ryan) Ahern.

Hubert "Bertie" Thomas Ahern
Bertie Ahern died on December 7 1990. Born in 1910 the eldest of three children (Bertie, Molly and Austin) to Daniel and Evelyn Ahern he lived all his life in St. Patrick Street, Boyle, Co.Roscommon in a house purchased by his Grandfather James Heran in 1897 and which is now occupied by Bertie's son Rory. He married Nancy O'Connor from Fairymount, Frenchpark in 1943 and had six children, Fergus (Chartered Accoutant), Evelyn (Medical Doctor), Niall (Priest), Rory (runs family business established in 1897), Daniel (Art Teacher) and Mary Patricia (Solicitor). He was a totally dedicated husband and father with a great sense of public duty and integrity.
