| Richard E. Ahern, 66, of 44 Hendom Drive, Feeding Hills, a retired combustion engineer and
contact administrator at Gilbarco Co., and a Navy veteran of World War II, died on Monday at Baystate
Medical Center in Springfield. He worked at Gilbarco of Windsor, Conn. (formerly Gilbert & Barker
Manufacturing Co. of West Springfield), and from 1966 to 1969 he received management training in
Greensboro, N.C. After that, he was a combustion engineer and contact administrator from 1969 until
retiring in 1985. As a contact administrator, he traveled to various parts of the world, including Korea,
India, Spain, Italy, and most of the United States. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and served
as a radarman third class aboard the USS Chester from 1943 to 1946.
Born in Springfield, he was a graduate of the High School of Commerce. He was graduated in 1952 from
Northeastern University with a degree in business administration management. He moved to Feeding Hills
in 1969. He was a founder and charter member of the Agawam Organ Club, and in 1980 became its first
president. He held the position for 10 years. He also belonged to the West Springfield Elks Lodge.
He leaves his wife of 41 years, the former Mary L. Sheehan; two daughters, Jo-Anne Haire of Enfield and
Margaret "Peggy" Long of West Springfield; two brothers,
Thomas P. Jr. of South Hadley and Philip of Fort
Worth, Texas; his stepmother, Alice (Teed) Ahern of Enfield; three stepbrothers, Richard Teed of Windsor,
William Teed of Enfield and Robert Teed of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three grandchildren, and several nieces and
nephews. The funeral will be Thursday morning at Colonial Funeral Home, with burial at Gate of Heaven
Cemetery in Springfield. Calling hours are Wednesday afternoon and evening. Memorial contributions may
