| Lt. William (Pat) Ahearn, USN (ret), of 368 Mail Coach Road, Portsmouth, assistant fire chief at the
Naval Base, died today at the Naval Hospital. He was 66. Mr. Ahearn worked for the government for 20 years
and prior to that he was in the navy for 30 years. He was a member of the All-Navy football team from 1926 to
1929 and was a member of the team that won the President's Cup in 1927. He was also lightweight boxing
champion of the Atlantic Fleet. In World War II, Mr. Ahearn spent five years in the Pacific as a beachmaster
in the amphibious force. He took part in the invasions of Guadacanal [sic], Tarawa, Saipan and Tinian. He
was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Newport Council, the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 19, the
Battleship Association of America, and the Holy Name Society of St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth.
He was born in Somerville, Mass., May 25, 1902, the son of Michael D. and Rebecca Orr Ahearn. He
leaves his wife, Mrs. Helena Sullivan Ahearn, five sons, Chief Warrant Officer William H. Ahearn Jr.,
stationed at Port Hueneme, Calif., Michael J. Ahearn of
West Springfield, Mass., Daniel J. Ahearn of Dubuque, Iowa, Timothy L. Ahearn of Warren, Airman Brian P.
Ahearn, USAF stationed in Izmir, Turkey, a daughter Miss Kathleen Sheila Ahearn of Portsmouth, nine
grabdchildren, a sister, Mrs. William Lett of Cambridge, Mass. and two nieces.
The funeral will be held Monday from the memorial Funeral Home to St. Barnabas Church for a solemn
high mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Columba's Cemetery where military honors will be rendered. |
